Cabinets of curiosities — also known as wonder-rooms — were encyclopedic collections of objects whose categorical boundaries were, in Renaissance Europe, yet to be defined. The term cabinet originally described a room rather than a piece of furniture. They gathered natural history, geology, ethnography, archaeology, relics, works of art, and antiquities. Beyond the famous cabinets of rulers and aristocrats, merchants and early scientists formed collections that were precursors to the modern museum — each one reflecting the particular interests of its curator.
